Reel People - Association of Anglers with disabilities

Ireland 2010

In June 2010 fourteen club members and helpers went on a trip of a lifetime fishing in Ireland.

We stayed at Cuisle, a centre built especially with the needs of disabled people in mind. All the accommodation is wheelchair accessible and equipment such as hoists etc were available.

Fishing  on the local River Suck where there are 36 purpose built fishing platforms was a little disappointing as we were the unlucky people who went to Ireland when it hadn't rained significantly for nearly three months !,resulting in the river being about five foot below its normal level (it was still sixteen foot deep in places !) and having very little flow. However we all caught and we also visited a large lake to the north of Cuisle where we had a pleasure day followed by a match in the same pegs again the level was down but everyone caught.

Five members went for a days sea fishing in Galway Bay catching Mackeral for bait,Cod,Pollack and then a run of good sized Dogfish.

The trip  was in wheelchair accessible transport and a support vehicle to carry the luggage and fishing equipment.

The trip  included accommodation, full board, evening entertainment, fishing permits, ferry crossing and transport.Shame it didn't include the cost of the Murphys Stout because a fair bit of it was drunk during the week.

We set a goal of raising £10,000 to help towards the cost of the trip and managed to get very close to it.

To achieve this total we had an active fund raising campaign which included; Bingo's; car boots; raffle's; book and tackle sales and an auction of promises.

We were very lucky in that several individuals and business's gave items that were used to raise funds, this was  greatly appreciated.
